DEPARTMENT OF DIOXIN

National Food Reference Laboratory (NFRL) Dioxin Lab. performs its studies with five personnel, three food engineers ( one has PhD degree , one has  MSc degree) , two agriculture engineers ( one has Associate Professor degree, one has MSc degree). Dioxins, Furans, Dioxin-like Polychlorinated Biphenyls ve Indicator Polychlorinated Biphenyls Analysis is performed in Food and Feed. Analyis is performed via HRMS system, and also via APGC system. Results produced via HRMS are accredited  for all matrices. The compliance of food and feed samples'  results is evaluated according to the "Turkish Food Codex Contaminants Regulation", and "Undesirable Substances in Feed Notification" respectively. 3-MCPD and glicidyl esters are also analysed in our lab. Via GC-MS, and the results are evaluated according to "Turkish Food Codex Contaminants Regulation". Dioxins (PCDDs), furans (PCDF) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are lipophilic, persistent, ubiquitous and bioaccumulative compounds which are the most toxic chemical contaminants for environment and human health. Dioxins are formed due to exposure of organic materials to high temperature in the presence of chlorine. Polychlorinated biphenyls are man made chemicals which had been produced in huge amounts in 1930-1970 and had been used widely. Studies have shown that more than 90% of human exposure to PCDD/Fs and PCBs originate from food, especially food of animal origin. 3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) and glicidyl  esters  are process contaminants which are formed in fats and oils at high temperatures in the presence of chlorine.  Our lab. is the national reference lab for persistent organic polutants, and also a part of National Reference Laboratories of EU  network, and  participates international proficiency tests and workshops that are being organized by EU Reference Laboratory (EU-RL,Freiburg) routinely.
